Galaxy Pizza Celebrates Grand Reopening with Official Ribbon Cutting in Hawesville

Galaxy Pizza, a beloved Hancock County staple, officially marked its grand reopening with a ribbon cutting event on May 5 at its location in Vastwood Park, Hawesville. Hosted by the Hancock County Chamber of Commerce, the celebration brought together community members eager to experience the revamped space and reconnect with a local favorite.

The event took place a few months after the reopening, allowing patrons to see the refreshed and inviting venue while the restaurant was fully operational. Owners Steve and Karen Robertson, a husband-and-wife team native to Hancock County, led the extensive renovations that blend cherished traditions with new enhancements.

Many longtime customers will be familiar with the restaurant’s iconic Star Wars artwork and galaxy-painted ceiling. Notably, the well-known Yoda painting by Gene Thompson remains a highlight near the pool table, preserving the nostalgic atmosphere while new upgrades add modern touches. The space now includes additional booths and televisions—especially in the back area—designed to create a comfortable sit-down dining environment that encourages longer visits and family gatherings.

The refreshed restaurant holds fast to its roots, focusing primarily on its famed pizza and ice cream. The menu underwent careful revisions, dropping previous barbecue items to spotlight classics like create-your-own pizzas, specialty pies, stromboli, wings, and sandwiches such as hot ham and cheese, Philly cheesesteak, and grilled chicken. Customers can also enjoy new options like gluten-free pizza crusts and innovative pizza bowls.

Ice cream remains a major draw, featuring hand-dipped flavors, soft-serve chocolate, vanilla, twist, and sundaes served from an eight-flavor glass-front display at the front counter. An array of candy toppings adds a customizable touch, enhancing the dining experience for families visiting the area.

Galaxy Pizza’s location in Vastwood Park is ideal for locals and visitors engaging in popular activities such as fishing, hiking, camping, swimming, and attending ballgames and school events nearby. The restaurant’s blend of food, games, and sports viewing offers a unique community hub where families and friends gather.

Steve and Karen Robertson emphasized their plans to resume delivery services soon, responding to the county’s limited options in that space. Delivery was paused initially to focus on dine-in and carryout during the reopening phase, but it’s expected to return in the near future.

Enhanced by a self-serve fountain drink station, updated sound system, and multiple televisions, the venue aims to provide an engaging atmosphere where customers can enjoy sports, play arcade games like Pop-A-Shot and Toy Soldier, and make lasting memories with children and grandchildren.

Galaxy Pizza is located at 955 Vastwood Park Road in Hawesville. Hours of operation are Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Customers can contact the restaurant at 270-922-2233 and follow updates via the Facebook page “Galaxy Pizza Since 1981,” maintained by the new owners.

This official ribbon cutting marks a new era for Galaxy Pizza while honoring its more than four-decade legacy in Hancock County, reaffirming its role as a cherished dining and community destination.
