Florida Woman Arrested After Puppy Thrown Twice Dies During Surgery
A brutal case of animal cruelty in Tampa, Florida, has shocked the community after a 1-year-old Maltese mix puppy was thrown twice by a woman and later died during surgery. The disturbing attack, which was captured by surveillance cameras on the evening of April 30, 2026, prompted swift arrests and an ongoing investigation by law enforcement authorities.
Imania Sharron Davis, 33, was arrested and charged with six felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty following the harrowing incident. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office affidavit, Davis was filmed lifting the approximately 5-pound puppy by the scruff of its neck, then violently throwing the animal approximately 22 feet onto asphalt. The dog landed but later cowered near Davis with its tail tucked, visibly frightened.
The video evidence further revealed that Davis kicked the dog and slapped its head with open hands. Shocking footage shows her picking the puppy up again and violently swinging it before throwing the animal into the air a second time—this time roughly 10 feet high, traveling about 25 feet, before it landed in a small bush beside another asphalt road.
Following the attack, the injured puppy, believed to be a stray, was taken to the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center for emergency care. Veterinary staff, led by Dr. Jerika Brooks, worked tirelessly throughout Tuesday to save the dog, performing multiple surgeries including a difficult front-leg amputation.
Despite these efforts, the puppy succumbed during surgery. Hillsborough County officials released a statement Tuesday evening saying, “Despite the tireless efforts of our dedicated veterinary staff, the Pet Resource Center is saddened to share that the abused dog brought into our care passed away during surgery Tuesday.”
Authorities Condemn Abuse, Explore Additional Charges
Sheriff Chad Chronister called the case “deeply disturbing” and denounced the violence inflicted on the innocent animal. “What this innocent animal endured was cruel, violent, and unacceptable,” Chronister said. He also praised the Pet Resource Center and veterinarians for their dedication to saving the dog’s life despite the tragic outcome.
Booking records show Davis remains in custody with bond set at $75,000. The sheriff’s office is actively consulting with the State Attorney’s Office about potentially adding charges related to the puppy’s death.
The incident underscores renewed calls for tougher enforcement of animal cruelty laws nationwide. Animal welfare advocates are urging communities—from North Carolina to Florida and beyond—to stay vigilant and report abuse to protect vulnerable animals from similar fates.

The investigation continues as officials work to hold the suspect accountable and prevent future cruelty. Animal lovers and advocates are following the case closely, demanding justice for the maltreated puppy whose suffering was caught on disturbing video.
