Car Crash on U.S. 441 North Leads to DUI Arrest with Elevated BAC
OKEECHOBEE — A vehicle collision last week on the 2800 block of U.S. 441 North quickly escalated when deputies arrested Christine Craine on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI) after detecting a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.
The incident occurred at approximately 7 p.m. on April 20. According to official reports, Craine was behind the wheel of a 2025 Chevrolet Trax when she turned right off Northwest 23rd Lane onto U.S. 441 North and sideswiped a 2016 white Chevrolet van heading southbound.
Deputy Morris witnessed the incident and instructed both vehicles to move to the 2000 block of U.S. 441 North for further investigation. During the traffic stop, Deputy Merlino engaged with the SUV driver and noted a strong smell of alcohol from her breath. When questioned, Craine admitted to consuming two drinks approximately two hours before the crash while coming from the soccer fields.
Deputy Merlino then called for Deputy Misei Esquivel to conduct a formal DUI investigation at the scene. Deputy Esquivel’s report confirmed that Craine agreed to participate in field sobriety tests. Following the exercises, Craine was arrested on charges of DUI with property damage.
High BAC Levels Confirm DUI Charges
At the county jail, breathalyzer tests revealed blood alcohol concentrations (BAC) of 0.178 and 0.182, more than twice the legal limit in Florida and indicative of significant impairment.
