UPDATE: The Redondo Union boys basketball team delivered an impressive performance, defeating Democracy Prep from Las Vegas 87-61 in a thrilling matchup at Harvard-Westlake’s Winter Showcase on November 10, 2023. This victory marks a strong start for the Sea Hawks, now boasting a record of 3-0 this season.
The Sea Hawks entered the game with a fierce determination, having narrowly missed the CIF State finals last season. They channeled that heartbreak into their current campaign, loading their nonleague schedule with formidable opponents to ensure they are battle-ready for a tough Bay League and the upcoming CIF-SS Playoffs.
For the first ten minutes, the game was tightly contested. However, following a crucial timeout, Redondo Union unleashed a staggering 21-6 run, setting the tone for the rest of the match. SJ Madison led the charge with a standout performance, scoring 23 points, along with six rebounds, four steals, and two blocks.
In a postgame interview, Madison remarked, “Our coaches are always telling us that we have to play aggressively on defense. We started to pick it up in the second quarter, and things just went from there. We are trying to beat everyone. We don’t want to lose at all.”
The Sea Hawks continued their momentum into the second half, with Madison scoring eight of the first twelve points, stretching the lead to a commanding 31 points by the late third quarter. Even as Democracy Prep attempted to close the gap, Redondo Union responded decisively, with Madison and Devin Wright combining for a series of critical plays that reinstated their substantial lead.
Wright contributed significantly with 17 points, four rebounds, and three assists. He echoed his teammate’s sentiments, stating, “We are trying to keep that aggressive mindset every game. We all have worked so hard in the offseason learning from last year, and we don’t want to let that happen again.”
Despite the commanding win, coach Reggie Morris emphasized the need for improvement. “We didn’t get off to a good start in the first half. I told my guys they have to start playing with more urgency and be more aggressive on defense,” he said. Morris acknowledged Madison’s leadership and urged his team to maintain their focus as they face increasingly tough competition.
The Sea Hawks remain committed to their goal of returning to the CIF State finals, understanding that each game serves as a crucial step towards that aspiration.
As they continue their season, Redondo Union will face even greater challenges ahead, but with their current momentum and determination, they are poised to make a significant impact. Fans and supporters are eager to see how this season unfolds for the Sea Hawks.
