Restored Civil War Flag of 21st Michigan Regiment to Be Unveiled

The restored battle flag of the 21st Michigan Regiment from the Civil War will be unveiled to the public on Saturday, March 9, 2024, at the Ionia Armory. The ceremony is set to begin at 1 p.m. and is organized by VFW Post 12082 of Ionia and VFW Post 4646 of Muir/Lyons.

This historic flag, which has represented sacrifice and community pride for over 150 years, was prominently displayed in the Ionia County Courthouse until its removal in April 2024 for professional restoration in North Carolina. Crafted by the “Ladies of Ionia,” mothers of soldiers from the regiment, the flag carries a deep historical significance.

Honoring Legacy and Sacrifice

Eric Calley, commander of VFW Post 4646, emphasized the importance of this project, stating, “This project has always been about more than restoring a historic relic. It’s about preserving the story of those who carried this flag into battle — honoring their sacrifice and ensuring their legacy continues to inspire future generations.”

The restoration was made possible through the collaborative efforts of local historians, veterans, and community advocates, alongside the specialized work of textile conservators who focused on preserving this fragile piece of Michigan’s history.

Shane Houghton, quartermaster of VFW Post 12082, reflected on the flag’s significance, noting, “This flag embodies endurance, unity and the unwavering spirit of those who served. Its return to Ionia is a powerful reminder of the generations who defended our freedom and the community that continues to honor them.”

Details of the Ceremony

The unveiling ceremony will feature remarks from local veterans, community leaders, and historians, culminating in a formal presentation of the restored flag. This event is free and open to the public, encouraging community members to attend and engage with their local history.
