SCRANTON, Pa. — A beloved nun has joyfully marked her 104th birthday today, surrounded by friends and fellow residents at the Our Lady of Peace Residence in Scranton. Sister Marionette Coll received a warm and spirited reception, highlighting a life dedicated to service and faith. “Well, it feels good,” she exclaimed, soaking in the attention that comes with reaching such a remarkable milestone.
Born on November 17, 1921, in Pittsburgh, Sister Marionette is one of twelve children in a vibrant Irish Catholic family. Her journey into the convent began at the age of 17, a decision she recalls vividly. “When I came to the convent, I came on the night train from Pittsburgh, by myself,” she shared. “The sisters got me a special card for clergy. And I wasn’t clergy.”
Over her extraordinary life, Sister Marionette has witnessed significant historical events, having lived through 18 U.S. Presidents and even seeing the rise and fall of the Soviet Union. Yet, her fondest memories come from working with children. “This one kid said to me one day, ‘You never get sick, do you?’ And I said, ‘No, so don’t plan on it,'” she recounted with a twinkle in her eye. “I never missed a day of school.”
Sister Marionette credits her longevity to simple pleasures, including her daily games of Scrabble and engaging in heartfelt conversations with those around her. “I take that, you take it one day at a time, and you try to make that a good day,” she said, emphasizing her positive outlook on life.
As this vibrant nun celebrates her 104th birthday, her story resonates with many, reminding us of the joy found in connection, faith, and resilience. Her plans for the future include continuing her cherished Scrabble games and sharing laughter with friends, ensuring that each day remains meaningful.
This touching celebration not only marks a personal milestone for Sister Marionette but serves as an inspiration to all, proving that age is just a number when filled with love and purpose. As she continues to thrive, her legacy of kindness and joy remains a beacon for many.
