James Van Der Beek is showing resilience in his fight against colorectal cancer, as his wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, recently shared that he is “bouncing back.” The actor, known for his role in “Dawson’s Creek,” showcased his spirit by posting a video on social media of himself throwing a football while wearing his “Varsity Blues” jersey, which features the name of his character from the 1999 film.
In the video, the 48-year-old actor expressed gratitude to his fans for their ongoing support, which has significantly contributed to funding his treatment and assisting other families facing similar challenges. He announced a sale of both autographed and unsigned jerseys, a follow-up to a previous sale last year. “By popular demand! My favorite jersey,” he wrote on Instagram. “Last year when I released the Blues jersey, I was blown away by the love and support I received from all of you. It has meant more than I can ever express.”
Community Support and Fundraising Efforts
Van Der Beek continued to convey his appreciation, stating, “For me, every jersey I sign is a magical full-circle moment. Thank you — for the love, the prayers, the support, and for making this jersey mean something far bigger than a movie. Endlessly grateful for all of you.” He assured fans he would expedite the signing process for the jerseys this time around.
In a show of support, his wife added, “You’re a wizard. Bouncing back, baby!!” Van Der Beek publicly revealed his cancer diagnosis in November 2023. According to the American Cancer Society, colorectal cancer ranks as the third most common cancer diagnosis for both men and women in the United States.
Financially, the burden of colorectal cancer treatment is substantial. The Centers for Disease Control notes that this type of cancer has the second-highest treatment cost among all cancer forms. To help alleviate his medical expenses, Van Der Beek has partnered with Propstore to auction off various props and wardrobe items from his television and film career. This auction is set to occur during Propstore’s Winter Entertainment Memorabilia Live Auction from December 5 to December 7, 2023.
Items of Interest in the Auction
Among the auctioned items is the necklace his character Dawson gave to Joey, portrayed by Katie Holmes, for prom in “Dawson’s Creek.” This piece is estimated to sell for between $26,400 and $52,800. Additionally, his outfit from the 1998 “Dawson’s Creek” pilot is expected to garner nearly $4,000. From “Varsity Blues,” he will also sell his West Canaan Coyotes hat and black and white Reebok cleats, with the estimated value of all items ranging from $1,320 to $52,800.
As James Van Der Beek continues to navigate this challenging chapter, his proactive approach to fundraising and community engagement underscores his determination and the support he receives from fans and loved ones alike. With each step, he not only fights for his health but also inspires others facing similar battles.
