Smoke Detector Saves Wilkes-Barre Family from Devastating Fire

URGENT UPDATE: A fire broke out this morning in a home on Dana Street in Wilkes-Barre, narrowly avoiding a tragedy thanks to a working smoke detector. The blaze erupted around 9 a.m., prompting quick action from local fire crews who rushed to the scene.

Wilkes-Barre Fire Chief Jay Delaney confirmed that the fire was challenging to control due to the home’s slate roof, which made firefighting efforts labor-intensive. “The slate roof was our worst enemy,” Delaney stated. Firefighters worked diligently to ensure the safety of the residents and successfully rescued a dog and a rabbit from the burning structure.

Homeowner Carolina Brito reported that the fire likely started in the back of the attic, although the exact cause remains unknown. Brito, who has lived in the house for 15 years, expressed devastation as her plans for a Thanksgiving celebration were abruptly interrupted. “I had the turkey in the refrigerator and everything,” she lamented. “So, we won’t be able to do it, not in this house.”

Fortunately, Brito and her son were the only inhabitants at the time of the fire, as her husband is currently in Florida. Delaney reassured the community that everyone is safe, noting that the home was insured but suffered significant damage.

According to reports, the timely alert from the smoke detector played a crucial role in the family’s escape, with Delaney emphasizing, “There was a working smoke alarm that alerted the family of the fire.” This incident highlights the vital importance of functioning smoke detectors in households.

As the investigation into the cause of the fire continues, officials urge residents to ensure their smoke detectors are operational. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
