Yale New Haven Health System (YNHHS) has strengthened its medical transport services by acquiring Nelson Ambulance Services and its affiliates, which include Access Ambulance Service, Connecticut Handivan, and The Limo Group. This strategic purchase aims to enhance patient transport capabilities across Connecticut, ensuring a more integrated experience for those in need of emergency medical services.
A celebration of this integration took place at Nelson’s facility in North Haven on Quinnipiac Avenue. Christopher O’Connor, the CEO of YNHHS, stated, “YNHHS is always looking for opportunities to grow and strengthen services to better meet the needs of the patients and communities we serve.” He emphasized that this acquisition would significantly expand the health system’s medical transport capabilities, providing seamless transitions for patients throughout their care journey.
While YNHHS has been working closely with Nelson leaders to develop a smooth transition plan over recent months, the acquisition also aims to enhance access for existing patients and bolster medical transport across the region. According to company officials, YNHHS will continue to maintain emergency transport services currently offered at Nelson’s North Haven and Milford hubs, preserving collaboration with current partners to ensure uninterrupted patient care.
In a statement reflecting on the acquisition, Saleem Khan, president of Nelson Ambulance Services and its affiliated transportation companies, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to elevate their services. “Many people have a business but can never take it to the next level – we were able to exceed our expectations,” he remarked, attributing their success to the dedicated staff and resources now available through YNHHS.
As part of this move, YNHHS is committed to adhering to the most recent Connecticut Statewide EMS Protocols, which were released in October. This commitment ensures that the newly integrated services align with state standards and enhance patient care quality.
Yale New Haven Health operates five hospitals, including Bridgeport, Greenwich, Lawrence + Memorial, Westerly, and Yale New Haven Hospitals, alongside several specialty networks and Northeast Medical Group, a nonprofit medical foundation comprising numerous community-based and hospital-employed physicians.
In a related financial update, YNHHS agreed in September to pay $45 million to Prospect Medical Holdings to resolve a long-standing dispute regarding the acquisition of Waterbury, Rockville General, and Manchester Hospitals. This settlement concludes a legal battle that persisted over several years, focusing on the future of these critical healthcare facilities.
The acquisition of Nelson Ambulance Services marks a significant step for YNHHS as it continues to expand its services and improve healthcare access in Connecticut. With a focus on integrating transport solutions, YNHHS aims to enhance patient experiences and outcomes in an ever-evolving healthcare landscape.
