UPDATE: The Redwood High football team’s season came to a heartbreaking end as they suffered a 20-0 loss to Miramonte in the North Coast Section Division IV semifinals in Orinda on Friday night. Despite multiple opportunities, the Giants (6-6) were unable to convert crucial drives into points, marking a disappointing conclusion to their playoff campaign.
Redwood’s offense had a promising start, with quarterback Cash Ward connecting with Dylan McGrath for a stunning 50-yard gain to Miramonte’s 25-yard line. However, the Giants fell short on fourth down, setting a troubling tone for the remainder of the game.
Miramonte quickly capitalized on Redwood’s missteps. Quarterback Lane Dalton executed a game-changing 60-yard pass to the 1-yard line, leading to an early touchdown and a 7-0 lead. The Matadors extended their advantage to 10-0 with a 35-yard field goal by James Rogers, capitalizing on a crucial penalty against Redwood.
The Giants struggled offensively, facing three-and-out situations repeatedly. A pivotal moment occurred late in the second quarter when a potential fumble recovery by Redwood was ruled out of bounds, allowing Miramonte to score again and push their lead to 17-0 just before halftime.
As the second half began, both teams exchanged possessions, but Redwood remained unable to find the end zone. Miramonte’s defense proved formidable, with Redwood’s offense stalling at critical moments. Despite starting drives at favorable positions, including Miramonte’s 32-yard line, the Giants failed to convert on fourth downs, which haunted them throughout the game.
With just over ten minutes left, Miramonte extended their lead to 20-0 with another field goal from Rogers. Redwood mounted a significant drive, running the ball six times in a row, but their efforts ended in frustration as they failed to convert on yet another fourth down attempt from the 12-yard line.
As time wound down, Redwood got one last chance to score but was thwarted again when Miramonte’s Henry Hunt intercepted a pass in the red zone, sealing a shutout for the Giants.
This loss marks a stark contrast to the previous season when Redwood advanced to the D-IV title game. Fans and players alike are left reflecting on the missed opportunities and what could have been. As the dust settles, the Giants will need to regroup and look ahead to next season, while Miramonte celebrates their hard-fought victory.
