URGENT UPDATE: Starting December 5, 2023, the Hardware Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Utah invites visitors for an unforgettable wildlife experience featuring sleigh rides among majestic wild elk. This seasonal event, hosted by Haviland’s Old West Adventures, runs through February 15, 2024, allowing nature lovers to immerse themselves in the serene beauty of winter landscapes.
Every weekend from Friday to Sunday, and on select dates including December 22, 23, 29, 30, and 31, guests can hop on sleigh or wagon rides to witness the breathtaking sight of hundreds of elk. This is not just a ride; it’s an educational journey. The onsite Education Center offers an engaging “All About Elk” exhibit, providing insights into the natural history of these incredible creatures.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the Education Center will hold Christmas ornament-making sessions using native flora. This unique opportunity allows visitors to create lasting memories while taking home a piece of the WMA’s rustic charm, as noted by DWR Hardware Wildlife Education Center Director Marni Lee.
Ticket prices are accessible: adults and children over the age of 9 pay $12.50, while children aged 4 to 8 can join for just $5. Best of all, children aged 3 and under ride for FREE! Tickets must be purchased in person at the Hardware Wildlife Education Center on the day of the ride, so plan ahead to secure your spot.
However, amidst the excitement, wildlife managers are vigilant about a concerning issue—brucellosis. This disease, affecting elk and bison in the Greater Yellowstone Area, poses risks such as abortions and low fertility rates among infected animals. With the elk at Hardware WMA known for their widespread migration, wildlife managers like Jim Christensen, DWR Northern Region Wildlife Manager, are taking proactive measures to mitigate the risk of disease spread. The timing of the viewing and feeding season aims to encourage elk dispersion during critical periods when disease transmission is at its highest.
For those eager to experience this winter wonderland, Hardware WMA is located 16 miles east of Hyrum on state Route 101, winding through the scenic Blacksmith Fork Canyon. Visitors are urged to respect the wildlife and the delicate balance of this sanctuary, where every encounter with elk is a reminder of nature’s beauty and fragility.
This winter, don’t miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with wildlife and nature in a breathtaking setting. For more details or to arrange your adventure, consult the DWR website or contact Hardware WMA directly via phone or email. Act fast; the wild awaits!
