On November 15, 2023, the Davis High cross country and girls’ water polo teams delivered standout performances at the section finals, showcasing their determination and skill in a day filled with competitive spirit. The events took place at the Willow Hills Reservoir course, adjacent to Folsom High School, where over 1,500 athletes, family members, and supporters gathered to witness the championship battles.
The day kicked off with the cross country races, where the atmosphere was charged with excitement. I arrived early and utilized my mountain bike to navigate the 3.1-mile course, positioning myself strategically to capture the action. The boys and girls junior varsity races featured nearly 100 competitors each, and the intensity was evident as they approached the final steep hill. Coaches and parents encouraged the runners with shouts of, “Pump your arms!” and “Look up, it helps!”
As the junior varsity runners crossed the finish line, a three-wheeled rescue motorcycle monitored the course for those who needed assistance. The focus then shifted to the elite varsity races, where the stakes were high. The girls’ race began first, and the pace was blistering. Among the frontrunners was Avery Wolk, who quickly established a commanding lead, pursued by her teammate Norah Feldt and others, including Lilian Hales-Yang and Katelyn Secrest.
In a display of teamwork and resilience, the Blue Devils secured the team title, with Wolk finishing as the medalist. The team’s remarkable performance was highlighted by six finishers in the top nine, including Layla Wolk and Kailee Mallow.
Next up were the varsity boys, featuring defending Division 1 champion Elias Thornson, who was determined to maintain his title despite battling a minor injury. Thornson executed his strategy perfectly, staying behind two runners from McClatchy for the first loop. As he found his rhythm, he surged ahead during the final loop, ultimately crossing the finish line first and securing a second consecutive championship. Despite concerns from head coach Bill Gregg about the team’s overall standings, the Blue Devils finished second overall, earning a spot at the State meet.
With the cross country competition concluded, I made my way to the Roseville Aquatics Center, arriving just as the girls’ water polo final commenced. The Davis High girls’ team entered the match with an undefeated season, aiming to avenge their previous year’s loss to Granite Bay in the section finals.
The Blue Devils dominated the match, ultimately winning 13-4, and lifting the section banner in a triumphant display. Following the victory, coach Jamey Wright celebrated with the team by participating in the traditional pool jump, marking a memorable conclusion to the day.
Overall, Championship Saturday proved to be an exceptional day for the Davis High community, with six section champions crowned in water polo and ten varsity titles awarded in cross country competitions. The achievements of the Blue Devils reflect not only their athletic prowess but also the hard work and dedication of all the athletes involved.
