URGENT UPDATE: Tragedy strikes as James Edward Smith, a beloved young man from Lowell, MA, has passed away unexpectedly at just 26 years old in Tampa, FL. The shocking news broke early on the morning of November 8, 2025, leaving family, friends, and the community in profound grief.
James was born on May 21, 1999, and grew up in Lowell, where he became a cherished son, fiancé, brother, and friend. He attended local schools, culminating in his graduation from Lowell High School in June 2017. He later pursued higher education at Plymouth State University, where he met his fiancé, Nicole DeCicco, further enriching his vibrant life.
Known for his adventurous spirit, James relished skiing and golfing, often pushing limits on the slopes and mastering his short game on the golf course. He was a standout athlete, earning letters in football, wrestling, and lacrosse during high school, continuing his passion for lacrosse in college.
In a commitment to his country, James joined the New Hampshire National Guard, completing basic training at Fort Jackson, SC, in 2021. He served in various capacities, including disaster response efforts, and proudly rose to the rank of Sergeant in December 2024. His dedication to service was unwavering, with plans to re-enlist and deploy abroad in the near future.
Friends and family remember James for his infectious smile and ability to make everyone feel welcome, regardless of their background. He was known as “Smitty” to those in Lowell and with the Guard, while “Jimbo” resonated with his college friends. His charismatic personality and humor left an indelible impact on all who knew him.

A public viewing will be held on Friday, November 21, 2025, from 3-7 PM at the O’Donnell Funeral Home, located at 276 Pawtucket St., Lowell. Relatives and friends are invited to attend his Funeral Mass on Saturday, November 22, at 11 AM at the Immaculate Conception Church. Committal services will occur later for family members.
