CC Sabathia Honored with Key to Vallejo on “CC Sabathia Day”

UPDATE: In an emotional ceremony earlier today, former MLB star and Hall of Famer CC Sabathia was honored with the key to the city of Vallejo during the inaugural “CC Sabathia Day.” The event celebrated Sabathia’s remarkable contributions to the community and his outstanding baseball career.

With the rain holding off just in time, Sabathia and his wife, Amber Sabathia, received numerous accolades, including a street renaming to “CC Sabathia Way” on Gateway Drive in North Vallejo. This recognition comes just months after Sabathia made history as the first Vallejo athlete inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in July 2023.

During the ceremony, Sabathia expressed heartfelt gratitude to his community. “I just want to say thank you to everyone in this community,” he said, visibly emotional as he remembered his childhood hero, Demetrius Davis, a local football star who passed away in 2012. Sabathia emphasized the impact of community role models in shaping his journey, stating, “I think about the impact he had on the community, and I’m just trying to be like him.”

Vallejo Mayor Andrea Sorce hailed Sabathia as a symbol of the city’s heart and resilience, declaring, “It’s the story of CC Sabathia. It’s that heart and that grit.” The event gathered a who’s who of local dignitaries, former coaches, and friends, all praising the couple for their charitable work through the PitCCh-In Foundation, which offers free backpack giveaways and baseball clinics for local students.

Vallejo High Athletic Director Josh Ramos noted, “Ever since CC first stepped on the campus at Vallejo in 1995, his impact here has been never-ending.” He highlighted how Sabathia’s legacy continues to inspire current students.

As part of the festivities, children participated in a free baseball clinic, reinforcing Sabathia’s commitment to youth in Vallejo. “It was great to be able to do that today,” Sabathia said of the clinic, reflecting on his own experiences growing up in the community.

The event also featured resolutions from local officials, including state Senator Chris Cabadlon and California Assemblymember Lori Wilson, acknowledging Sabathia’s contributions. A painting of Sabathia was presented by the Vallejo High Alumni Association, and local businesses, such as Kaiser Permanente, recognized his impact on health and education in the area.

As the day concluded, Sabathia shared his affection for Vallejo, stating, “I always go back to my house in the crest. My aunt usually cooks for me, but if not, I go to Tacos Jaliscos to get some tacos.” His connection to the city remains strong, despite living in New York with his family.

The overwhelming support and love for Sabathia reflect his dedication to not only excelling in sports but also uplifting his community. The honor of “CC Sabathia Day” solidifies his legacy as a beloved figure in Vallejo, inspiring future generations.

This urgent celebration of Sabathia’s achievements resonates deeply with the community, making it clear that his influence will endure well beyond the baseball field.
