Ke‘ehi Small Boat Harbor to Receive $3.9M Upgrade Starting November 17

Boaters and coastal visitors to Ke‘ehi Small Boat Harbor can expect significant changes beginning on November 17, 2025. The harbor will undergo a major upgrade, costing approximately $3.9 million, aimed at addressing the challenges posed by rising sea levels. This initiative is designed to mitigate coastal inundation and adapt to the gradual sinking of the land.

The project involves comprehensive improvements, including the construction of grade adjustment walls and the addition of fill material to elevate the west side parking lot. The upgrades will eliminate existing potholes and enhance drainage systems, preventing flooding during rain events. In addition, the Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) has outlined plans for new fencing and signage to facilitate navigation for visitors.

The financial outlay for this project is $3,925,757, with an anticipated completion date of February 27, 2026. The primary objective is to carry out the upgrades while keeping the harbor operational, allowing water activities to continue without major interruptions. However, patrons should prepare for potential detours and reduced parking availability during the construction period.

Ke Nui Construction, LLC, the company tasked with the project, has committed to working closely with harbor staff and regular visitors to minimize disruptions. While the promise of “limited impacts” is reassuring, it is advisable for visitors to allocate extra time for entering and exiting the area, as noted by the DLNR.

This upgrade marks a proactive step in fortifying the harbor against the ongoing effects of climate change, ensuring that it remains a vital hub for boating and recreational activities in the region.
