UPDATE: Christopher Newport University (CNU) has made history! The football team completed its first-ever unbeaten regular season, defeating The College of New Jersey 27-7 on Friday night in Ewing. This victory not only secures a perfect 10-0 record but also showcases the team’s remarkable progress under head coach Paul Crowley.
In a thrilling showdown, senior wide receiver Colin Hart etched his name in the CNU record books by becoming the all-time receptions leader, catching seven passes for 101 yards. Quarterback Connor Barry shone brightly, connecting on 18 of 26 passes for 201 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 33 yards and another score on seven carries.
The Captains dominated early, with Zavier Kennedy breaking the scoreless tie with a 2-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, capping an impressive 19-play, 88-yard drive. Just minutes later, Barry threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Josh Powell, bringing the halftime score to 14-0.
CNU continued its onslaught in the third quarter, as Barry added a 2-yard TD run to extend the lead to 21-0. However, The College of New Jersey managed to break through with a 17-yard touchdown run from Joe Visaggio with just over ten minutes left in the fourth quarter, concluding a ten-play, 80-yard drive.
With just 1:54 remaining, Barry connected with Gunner White for a 3-yard touchdown pass, finalizing the score at 27-7.
The Captains, currently ranked 7th by d3football.com, have now won 15 consecutive games, dating back to last season. They await the announcement of their playoff bracket, which will be revealed on NCAA.com at 5 p.m. Sunday. CNU is expected to receive a first-round bye and could host a game in the round of 32, marking a significant milestone for the program.
