UPDATE: A turtle has tragically died following a disturbing animal cruelty incident at the Valencia Town Center mall on July 12, 2023. The incident unfolded around 2:30 p.m. when reports emerged of a man disturbing turtles in a pond at The Patios, an outdoor shopping area.
According to officials from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, deputies responded to the 24000 block of Valencia Boulevard after witnessing security footage that showed a 34-year-old transient from Van Nuys grabbing a turtle and slamming it onto the ground. The turtle succumbed to its injuries while under the care of the Los Angeles County Animal Care & Control, which confirmed the news late Friday afternoon.
Authorities have stated that the incident is under active investigation, with a necropsy planned to determine the cause of death. Deputy Mariela Picard emphasized that this step is crucial for progressing the animal cruelty investigation.
The responding deputies, alongside mall security, identified the suspect, who had previously been seen removing turtles from the pond. Eyewitness accounts revealed that the man was acting erratically and resisted arrest, prompting the use of force by law enforcement.
Picard highlighted a concerning detail: the transient was previously noted in a 2018 missing person alert issued by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, indicating ongoing mental health issues.
This incident not only raises serious concerns about animal welfare but also sheds light on the challenges to public safety in recreational areas. The community is urged to be vigilant and report any suspicious behavior surrounding wildlife.
As the investigation unfolds, authorities will continue to gather information and monitor the situation closely. Residents are encouraged to share any relevant details that could aid in the ongoing investigation.
