UPDATE: Just moments ago, the Lynnfield community came together to honor its veterans during a poignant ceremony at the Veterans Memorial on Lynnfield Common. The event, held on November 7, 2023, featured stirring speeches from military and civilian leaders, underscoring the sacrifices made by those who served.
Emceed by Veterans Agent Bruce Siegel, the ceremony attracted a crowd eager to pay tribute to the bravery of veterans. Select Board Chairman Phil Crawford addressed attendees with a powerful message, quoting poet G.K. Chesterton: “Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.” His words resonated deeply, reminding everyone of the shared bond among American veterans: an unwavering commitment to freedom.
The guest of honor, retired Army Captain David Gallo, captivated the audience with his personal stories from Desert Storm. A proud Lynnfield native, Gallo reflected on how local veterans inspired him throughout his life, emphasizing the importance of their sacrifices. He recounted marching in a welcome home parade for Lauren Lengyel, a U.S. Air Force captain and Vietnam POW, illustrating the profound impact these heroes have had on his journey.
“Heroes like Lengyel helped me conquer my own fears in battle,” Gallo shared, expressing gratitude for the inspiration he received. He conveyed a heartfelt message to the crowd, stating, “How we treat our veterans determines whether future generations are willing to serve. This impacts our national security every day.”
Gallo also highlighted the often-overlooked sacrifices of veterans’ families, sharing his own experiences. “I remember my wife being much more nervous about me going off to war than I was,” he noted, bringing a human element to the sacrifices made by military families.
The ceremony concluded with Gallo urging attendees to honor veterans not just on special days but every day, emphasizing that their sacrifices should be recognized continuously. “The wonderful town of Lynnfield understands this and lives it every day,” he concluded, leaving the crowd inspired and reflective.
This heartfelt tribute serves as a reminder of the importance of community support for veterans and their families, reinforcing the idea that honoring their legacy is vital for the future of the nation.
Stay tuned for more updates as the town continues to celebrate its heroes and their lasting impact on the community.
