UPDATE: The WAVE Project is urgently appealing for $68,000 in donations to continue providing vital shelter services for hundreds experiencing homelessness this winter. The nonprofit, based at the Trinity Christian Community Center in Warren, Michigan, has served the metro Detroit area since 2018 and is facing critical funding challenges.
Officials confirm that the shelter, which has provided over 6,300 stays last winter alone, is essential for many individuals in Macomb County and surrounding areas. “There are literally hundreds of people in our communities… experiencing some form of homelessness,” stated Todd Gordon, co-founder and executive director of WAVE Project. The organization is looking to keep its doors open seven days a week for 12 weeks starting at the end of December.
The need for immediate funding is heightened as several of WAVE Project’s partners have reduced their contributions. “We’re going to be very heartbroken if we can’t be open, along with all the people that need us,” said Sheila Chauvin, project manager for the Macomb County Winter Shelter.
Last winter, WAVE Project offered more than just a roof over heads; it provided warmth, meals, and companionship to those in need. “A lot of people don’t want to talk to them or be around them… what they need is somebody to give them a hug, to sit down and have dinner with them,” Chauvin added.
The urgency to raise funds is critical, with Gordon noting that without the full $68,000, the shelter may only operate for a month with $41,000. “People wouldn’t believe what it actually costs to keep this place warm,” he explained, highlighting the necessity for security, utilities, and operational costs.
Every contribution, whether $10 or more, is crucial for maintaining this essential community service. “It is very important to us and all the people in our community that are unhoused that they have somewhere to go,” Chauvin emphasized.
In addition to shelter, WAVE Project provides mobile showers and distributes clothing to those in need, making their mission even more significant as winter approaches. The community is called to action to support this urgent cause and ensure that the most vulnerable populations have a safe haven during the cold months ahead.
