Samuel Bennett Johnson, Beloved Engineer and Family Man, Dies at 82

URGENT UPDATE: The community of Capitola, CA, is mourning the loss of Samuel Bennett Johnson II, who passed away at the age of 82 due to complications related to Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy. His death was confirmed earlier today, leaving behind a legacy of kindness and a deep love for family.

Johnson was a cherished husband to Mary Ann Johnson, with whom he shared an incredible 58 years of marriage. Together, they raised three children—Christine Abusaidi, Mike Johnson, and Julie Longmire—and were proud grandparents to seven grandchildren. His family has expressed profound sorrow, stating, “Sam’s spirit lives on with all who knew him well.”

Born in 1942 on Coronado Island, San Diego, Johnson spent his early years as a self-proclaimed “beach bum,” enjoying activities like spearfishing and sailing. In 1960, he moved to Wisconsin, where he pursued engineering at UW Madison. There, he met Mary Ann, marking the beginning of a beautiful partnership.

After marrying in 1967, the couple raised their family in Wauwatosa, WI, but Johnson’s heart was always drawn back to California. In 1981, he accepted a position at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA, which led to relocating to Pleasanton, CA. Johnson retired at 62, embracing life’s next chapter in Capitola, where he and Mary Ann enjoyed beachside living.

During retirement, Johnson became an active member of the Santa Cruz Rowing Club, fostering close relationships with fellow rowers. Even after health challenges prevented him from rowing, he remained involved by teaching the next generation of rowers to rig and repair boats. His passion for engineering was evident in his garage workshop, where he spent countless hours “puttering” and “tinkering.”

As the family reflects on his life, they wish to thank Santa Cruz Hospice for their compassionate care during Johnson’s final days. In an emotional statement, his family noted, “Although Sam is no longer with us in body, his legacy of joy and love will forever resonate in our hearts.”

In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial donations to hospice organizations in Johnson’s memory. This call to action reflects the values he instilled in his family: kindness, community, and love.

The loss of Samuel Bennett Johnson resonates deeply within the Capitola community, where he will be remembered not just for his accomplishments, but for the warmth and joy he brought to those around him. As friends and family gather to celebrate his life, the impact of his kindness will continue to shine brightly.
