UPDATE: In a powerful display of unity and peace, a multifaith Israeli boxing team faced off against British boxers at the Gloves and Doves event on July 15, 2023, at the JW3 cultural centre in London. The event highlighted a crucial message: that people of all faiths and backgrounds in Israel stand together against the narrative that “Zionism is racism.”
The Israeli team, composed of two Muslim and four Jewish athletes, showcased their spirit and determination to foster understanding and camaraderie. Every fighter wore clothing emblazoned with the words “fight for peace” in English, Arabic, and Hebrew. “We are here for peace, we are here for unity,” emphasized Tony Milch, founder of the initiative and a British-Israeli dual national.
This marked the second annual trip for young Israeli boxers to the UK, following last year’s event held in Camden. The project aims to bridge gaps and build relationships among youth from diverse backgrounds, demonstrating that Israel is a multicultural society. “Many who hear about Gloves and Doves don’t even know there are Arabs in Israel,” Milch stated. “If we can change one mind at a time, we’ll have accomplished what we set out to do.”
The event, supported by the World Boxing Council (WBC), featured a live-streamed audience and ticket sales that underscored its significance. The boxing ring became a transformative space where athletes built mutual respect through competition. “The respect you have for yourself after being in the ring is profound,” Milch noted.
Attendees witnessed an inspiring moment when Alireza Ghadiri, an undefeated professional boxer of Iranian descent, presented the Alexander Mashkevitch Award to the youngest fighter of the night, Mahmoud Majid, a 13-year-old Arab Israeli from the village of Makr. Majid impressed the audience with his skills and potential, representing hope for future generations.
The atmosphere was electric, with boxers from both teams forging bonds through their shared passion for the sport. British competitor Charles Whitewood, who won his bout against an Israeli opponent, remarked, “We didn’t trade many words; we traded punches instead, which brought us closer than words ever could.” He described the event as one of the best experiences of his boxing career, highlighting the overwhelming sense of love and brotherhood present that night.
The Gloves and Doves initiative is gaining traction, drawing attention to the diverse fabric of Israeli society while promoting peace through sport. As the boxing community rallies around this unique project, the hope for a more united future grows stronger.
