Abigail Spanberger Makes History as Virginia’s First Female Governor

UPDATE: History has been made in Virginia as former U.S. Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger (D) has been elected as the state’s first-ever female governor. Virginians cast their votes on November 4, 2025, and as of 8:02 p.m., Spanberger is leading with an impressive 54.9% of the vote, surpassing her Republican opponent, current Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears, by a remarkable 10-point margin.

This historic victory not only marks a significant milestone for women in politics but also highlights Spanberger’s strong political presence. Analysts had consistently identified her as a frontrunner throughout the election cycle, given her extensive experience and background as the U.S. Representative for Virginia’s District 7 from 2015 until 2025.

Even in defeat, Earle-Sears made history as the first-ever Black woman nominated by the Republican Party for Virginia governor. Previously, she was also the first Black woman to serve as Virginia’s lieutenant governor and the second woman of any race to hold a statewide office in the state.

“This election is a testament to the progress we are making in Virginia,” Spanberger stated in her victory speech. “I am honored to serve and represent all Virginians.”

The election results are based on preliminary counts from the Associated Press. All results remain unofficial until certified by Virginia’s State Board of Elections. With such a momentous outcome, eyes will be on Spanberger as she prepares to take office and address the issues facing Virginia.
