Shenandoah County Library Expands Community Engagement with New Events

The Shenandoah County Library is broadening its community outreach through innovative events under the guidance of its new outreach services coordinator, Morgan Strassner. Strassner aims to transform perceptions of the library, promoting it as a vibrant hub for community interaction rather than just a repository for books. “We’re trying to tell the community that the library can be so much more for you than a place where you can get books,” she stated.

Strassner’s vision is driven by her understanding that many residents may not be avid readers. She relates personally, noting, “I don’t really read either. I listen to audiobooks, which is still reading.” Emphasizing the library’s role as a welcoming space, she added, “The library is one of those last free spaces, and it’s a place for connection.”

Creating Connections through Events

Since her appointment, Strassner has focused on dismantling financial barriers that prevent community engagement. She described her mission as one of inclusivity, saying, “I really like bringing the community together over a shared or common interest.” She highlighted the significance of affordable activities, referencing instances where families may want to engage in creative projects but are deterred by costs.

The outreach initiative recently kicked off with a Taylor Swift launch party in mid-October. This event attracted participants of all ages, who gathered to listen to Swift’s new album while crafting friendship bracelets. “We ended up listening to the album one way through and then put it on shuffle while making bracelets,” Strassner said. The gathering resulted in more than just crafts; it fostered friendships and strengthened community bonds, which Strassner considers central to the library’s mission.

Strassner elaborated on her approach to outreach: “You have to put the word out. But you also have to be out in the community and make connections.” She believes that attendance figures, while important, do not capture the entire picture. Receiving feedback from participants about their enjoyment and interest in future events is a measure of success for her.

Upcoming Events to Encourage Participation

With the momentum gained from the launch party, Strassner is keen to engage more residents of Shenandoah County. She encourages community members to share their ideas and needs, stating, “We want to hear from you. If you want a book purchased or an event planned, we want to make it happen because we’re here to serve everyone.” Residents can contact her via email at [email protected] or by calling 540-984-8200.

To sustain this community spirit, Strassner has organized a series of events for November, designed to cater to diverse interests. The upcoming activities include:

– **November 6 at 17:00**: A Walking Audiobook Club at W.O. Riley Park in Woodstock. Participants are invited to bring headphones and enjoy an audiobook while walking, with discussions following the stroll.

– **November 15 at 11:00**: A Kitten Play Date and Adoption Day, in collaboration with the Humane Society of Shenandoah County. This event allows attendees to interact with kittens and potentially adopt a new pet.

– **November 18 at 17:30**: A “Twilight” Movie Party at the library in Edinburg. Attendees are encouraged to bring blankets and snacks for an engaging film experience.

– **December 4 at 18:00**: A K-Pop Demon Hunters event at the Edinburg library. All ages are welcome, and participants can dance, sing, and craft while enjoying popular songs from the soundtrack.

Strassner’s initiatives reflect a broader vision for the library as a place of community enrichment. By fostering connections and providing engaging activities, the Shenandoah County Library is poised to become an essential community resource, welcoming all residents to participate and share their ideas.
