URGENT UPDATE: A 42-year-old man has been hospitalized following an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound to his leg late Monday night in Sugar Bush Township, Bemidji. The incident occurred at 11:11 p.m. on October 27, 2023, as reported by Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs.
According to the sheriff’s office, the man was a passenger in a vehicle that stopped on Hales Road near Birchmont Beach Road. He exited the vehicle to unload his firearm when the weapon accidentally discharged, injuring his leg. The driver promptly notified emergency services and began heading towards Cass Lake Indian Health Service for immediate medical attention.
Law enforcement and emergency medical teams intercepted the vehicle on Mission Road SE and began administering critical care. The victim confirmed that the shooting was accidental. He was subsequently transported to Sanford Bemidji Medical Center for further treatment.
Deputies received assistance from both the Leech Lake Tribal Police Department and Leech Lake Ambulance Service, highlighting a coordinated response to the emergency.
