Kelce Breaks Chiefs Touchdown Record in 28-7 Victory

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce made history on October 29, 2023, tying the franchise record for total touchdowns during a commanding 28-7 victory over the Washington Commanders. Kelce’s 10-yard touchdown reception late in the third quarter marked his 83rd career score, equaling the record previously held by former running back Priest Holmes.

After the touchdown, quarterback Patrick Mahomes ensured the significance of the moment was not lost. He retrieved the game ball and handed it to a team staffer for Kelce to keep as a memento. “I just cherish these moments, man, being able to play at Arrowhead,” Kelce said, reflecting on the milestone.

The Chiefs’ victory was their fifth in six games, with each win achieved by a margin of at least ten points. Kelce had an outstanding performance, leading the team with six receptions for 99 yards. Mahomes praised Kelce, stating, “He’s just the true Chiefs’ Chief. He’s been here through the whole thing… He’s breaking all the records now.”

Despite a challenging first half, which saw the Chiefs tied 7-7 at halftime due to offensive errors, Kelce and the team rallied in the second half. The Chiefs’ offense struggled initially, with two turnovers contributing to the lackluster first half. Kelce noted, “When we decided in the second half to just rally together and match [the Commanders’] energy, we ended up putting some points on the board.”

Kelce’s performance showcased his skill in exploiting zone coverage, a tactic he has mastered throughout his career. According to Next Gen Stats, all of Kelce’s receptions came against the Commanders’ zone defense, capitalizing on the attention drawn by other speedier receivers.

In a standout play early in the third quarter, Kelce demonstrated his versatility by blocking before breaking free for a significant 38-yard gain. Mahomes elaborated on the play, saying, “Even though we haven’t been hitting some of these explosive plays, the defenses are respecting it.”

With this latest achievement, Kelce and Mahomes have become only the third quarterback-tight end duo in NFL history to record 75 touchdowns together, including playoffs, joining the likes of Tom Brady and Rob Gronkowski, and Philip Rivers and Antonio Gates.

Reflecting on his longevity and success, Kelce remarked, “I’m just the old, lucky dog still able to do this thing, man. I’m putting on the pads like I’m 15 years old again. I’m loving every single bit of it.”

As the Chiefs continue their season, Kelce remains focused on future games, determined to improve and add to his record-breaking achievements, ensuring that his contributions to the team’s culture endure.
