Local Business Owner Raises Environmental Concerns Over Data Center

A local business owner is voicing significant environmental and health concerns regarding plans for a data center near her property in Basom. LeeAnn Mullen, who operates both the Tahoe Pines Wellness Center, LLC and Tahoe Pines Custom Sewing & Designs, has raised alarms about a proposed data center at the STAMP site, located in the field behind her business.

In March 2025, the Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC) initially approved the data center but later revoked its approvals. Recent announcements suggest that the developer, Stream Data Center, is preparing to submit a proposal for a larger facility at the same location. Mullen expressed her concerns in a letter, highlighting the potential negative impact on the local environment and community health.

Having lived and worked in Basom for several years, Mullen purchased her property online in 2009, attracted by the area’s natural beauty. The proximity to Iroquois Wildlife Refuge and the aesthetic appeal of the surrounding pine trees played a significant role in her decision to open a wellness center. “It appeared to be the perfect location for an entrepreneur originally from Lake Tahoe to establish a business focused on health and wellness,” she stated.

Mullen’s apprehensions stem from the potential disruption a large data center could cause to the local ecosystem. She fears that increased traffic, noise, and pollution could diminish the tranquility and health benefits her wellness center aims to provide. Additionally, she believes that the development threatens the wildlife and natural resources that make the area unique.

As the situation develops, Mullen is advocating for community engagement in the decision-making process regarding the data center. She emphasizes the need for transparency and public input, urging local residents to voice their concerns. “We must consider the long-term implications of such a facility on our health and environment,” she stated.

The GCEDC has yet to respond publicly to Mullen’s concerns or outline the next steps in the approval process for the new proposal. Local residents and business owners are encouraged to stay informed and participate in discussions about the potential impact of the data center on the community.

As discussions continue, the outcome of this situation could have lasting effects on the Basom area and its residents. The balance between economic development and environmental preservation remains a critical issue for stakeholders involved.
