Beloved Artist Cheryl Jean Husby Passes Away at 76

UPDATE: Renowned artist and beloved community member Cheryl Jean Husby has passed away at the age of 76, surrounded by her family at St. Luke’s Hospital on October 14, 2025. Her family describes her as a “beautiful angel” whose legacy will forever resonate within the Duluth community.

Cheryl’s life was marked by artistic achievement and deep community involvement. Born on December 30, 1948, in Minneapolis, she graduated from U-High in 1966 and later pursued a successful academic career, earning her B.F.A. in 1983, an M.A. in 1984, and an M.F.A. in 1986 at esteemed institutions including the University of Wisconsin Superior and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.

Cheryl’s passion for art was evident in her accolades, including a prestigious 1st place award in clay at the Coconut Grove Art Festival. She was not just an artist but a vibrant personality known for her lively gatherings, from festive New Year’s celebrations to creative potlucks and themed parties. Her culinary skills, particularly her legendary apple pie, were celebrated by all who knew her.

Throughout her life, Cheryl was dedicated to community service, actively participating on boards for both the Duluth Art Institute and the Duluth Preservation Alliance. Her love for the outdoors was evident in her hobbies, which included gardening, skiing, and caring for her sled dogs while enjoying time in the Florida Keys.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Bob Husby; their children, Seth Draper and Elissa Husby; and her grandsons, Zane and Noah Draper, along with her siblings and many relatives and friends. The family expresses heartfelt gratitude to the medical staff at St. Luke’s Hospital, Mayo Clinic, and other caregivers who supported Cheryl in her final days.

Visitation services will take place at 10:00 AM on November 5 at First Lutheran Church, located at 1100 E. Superior Street. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM, with a reception to honor Cheryl’s life. Floral tributes are welcome, and donations in her memory can be made to the Depot Foundation and the Duluth Preservation Alliance.
