Alden Vincent Munson Jr., a respected engineer and intelligence leader, passed away on August 29, 2025, due to complications following heart surgery. He was a long-time resident of Manhattan Beach, California, and his contributions to the field of aerospace and national security left a significant impact.
Born on April 9, 1942, in Kingsburg, California, Alden grew up in a family deeply rooted in the logging industry. His early life was spent in Springville and later in Visalia, where he attended Mount Whitney High School. Alden excelled in both sports and music, playing football and the trombone. He continued his education at the College of the Sequoias before earning a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State College, where he met his future wife, Jane Stewart.

Alden began his professional journey at The Aerospace Corporation in 1966. His career took a significant turn in 1973 when he joined TRW. During his tenure, he led several important programs, ultimately becoming Vice President of the System Development Division. Alden’s pioneering work in developing a fully automatic electronic intelligence system earned him recognition as a Pioneer of National Reconnaissance by the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) in 2000.
After retiring from TRW in 1997, he assumed leadership roles at Litton Industries and later served as Deputy Director for Acquisitions at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence from 2007 to 2010. His dedication to the intelligence community continued well beyond retirement, as he actively consulted and mentored others in the field. Alden was awarded the National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal in 2009 for his exemplary service.
A Life of Passion and Community
Alden was known for his vibrant personality and unwavering commitment to his interests. He embraced life fully, whether engaging in political discussions or enjoying recreational activities. A passionate water-skier, he spent many joyful days on the Stockton Delta and looked forward to his heli-ski trip planned for the following year. Alden also cherished his time on the slopes with his grandsons, Max and Sam Bechtel.
His love for model trains was evident through his membership in the Los Angeles Model Railroad Society. Together with Jane, he traveled extensively, with New York City being a highlight, especially for attending musical theatre performances on and off Broadway.
Alden is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane; his daughter, Kathryn (Katie) Bechtel; his grandsons, Max and Sam; his sister, Marguerite (Pegi) Hover; and his brother, Charles, along with numerous cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and sister, Kathryn Munson.
