Filmmaker Captures Light at 2 Billion Frames Per Second
Innovative filmmaker Brian Haidet has achieved a remarkable milestone in high-speed videography by capturing a laser beam at an astonishing 2 billion frames per second. Published on his AlphaPhoenix channel, this project showcases a unique experiment that visually interprets the principles of special relativity.
To accomplish this feat, Haidet completely rebuilt his filming apparatus. Previously, in December 2022, he produced a video camera capable of recording at 1 billion frames per second. For this latest endeavor, he upgraded nearly every component, including the motors, hardware, oscilloscope, signalling systems, recording software, and processing software. The result is an impressive leap in both speed and resolution.
One of the most intriguing aspects of this new setup is the apparent difference in the speed of light as it approaches and moves away from the camera. Due to the experimental design, laser beams reflecting off fog particles closer to the camera seem to arrive faster than those bouncing back from further away. This phenomenon provides a visual representation of special relativity, illustrating complex scientific principles in a tangible way.
In addition to the main video, Haidet offers bonus material that delves deeper into the technical aspects of his work. His commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology and creativity is evident in every detail of this project, inviting viewers to engage in the fascinating intersection of science and art.
By sharing this groundbreaking experiment, Brian Haidet not only entertains but also educates his audience, making advanced concepts accessible and engaging.
