John (Jack) Bassett, a respected figure in law enforcement and community service, passed away in 2025 at the age of 83. His life spanned significant contributions to the Santa Cruz community, particularly during his tenure as Chief of Police from 1982 to 1994, where he became known for his integrity and steadfast leadership.

During his time as Chief of Police, Bassett guided Santa Cruz through numerous challenges, most notably the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck in October 1989. His calm demeanor and clear judgment provided much-needed reassurance to residents during this difficult period. Jack’s commitment to public service was evident in every aspect of his career, which began in 1965 when he joined the Santa Ana Police Department following four years of service in the U.S. Air Force.

A Dedicated Career in Law Enforcement

Rising through the ranks from patrol officer to Area Commander, Jack Bassett garnered respect from colleagues and community members alike. In 1982, he accepted the role of Chief of Police in Santa Cruz, a position he held for over a decade. His approach to policing was marked by compassion and fairness, earning him admiration from those he served.

After retiring in 1994, Bassett continued to contribute to his community. He supported local charities through his work with the Santa Cruz Honda dealership and later shared his investigative expertise with the County’s Personnel Department. His dedication to Santa Cruz remained unwavering throughout his life.

Outside of his professional commitments, Jack was an avid golfer, known for his impressive single-digit handicap. He and his late wife, Gretchen, were long-time members of the Pasatiempo Golf Course, where he enjoyed many memorable rounds of golf with friends.

A Family Man and Community Champion

In 2011, Jack relocated to the San Jose area, where he formed a lasting partnership with Joanne, whom he married in 2013. He is remembered fondly by his daughter, Stacey Costello, her husband Brian, and their son Patrick. Jack also embraced Joanne’s family, including her three children, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren, creating a bond that extended beyond traditional family ties.

Those who knew Jack often speak of his kindness, quiet strength, and genuine warmth. He had a profound appreciation for life’s simple pleasures, from family gatherings to sharing a drink of Jameson’s whiskey. His legacy of service and community spirit continues to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Jack Bassett will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for the love and support he offered to his family and community. His impact on Santa Cruz and its residents will remain a lasting testament to his character and dedication to public service.
