Project Self-Sufficiency Opens Paid Summer Jobs for Sussex County Teens
Sussex County, NJ — Project Self-Sufficiency is urgently calling rising high school sophomores and juniors to apply for its highly sought-after Summer Youth Employment Program, with applications closing on June 12. The program offers paid work experience designed to propel teens into the workforce from July 6 to August 6, Monday through Thursday.
This limited opportunity provides eligible teens with hands-on experience in clerical roles and landscaping projects on-site and throughout Sussex County. The program also includes daily instruction on essential career skills like resume writing, workplace etiquette, and interview techniques directly at the organization’s Career Center.
The program emphasizes real-world readiness, and Deborah Berry-Toon, executive director of Project Self-Sufficiency, stresses the importance.
“For many of these young people, the Summer Youth Employment Program is their first workplace experience,”
she said.
“The experience gives teens a foothold in the working world and often serves as a springboard into a future career.”
Who Can Apply and How to Get In
Eligibility is strict: only rising sophomores and juniors currently enrolled in Sussex County high schools with qualifying family incomes can apply. Applicants must also meet transportation needs—with free rides provided to and from the center—and submit references from high school staff. Additionally, all applicants undergo a skill assessment and interview process. Teens who have participated in past years are not eligible to apply again.
Because spots are limited, prospective participants should act immediately. The application must be submitted by June 12 to be considered. Applications can be downloaded online, and qualified candidates will be invited for interviews.
Why This Matters Now
This program stands out as a critical stepping stone for Sussex teens, especially amid the competitive job market across the United States. Early work experience coupled with career training can significantly impact the future success of young workers. Programs like this are vital in equipping youth with the tools needed to thrive in today’s workforce.
