Fatal Paddleboarding Accident at Jordanelle Reservoir Spurs Urgent Water Safety Warning
The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office has issued a strong water safety advisory after the tragic death of James A. Singer, a 24-year-old Salt Lake City resident, who drowned in an apparent paddleboarding accident at Jordanelle Reservoir on April 13.
Authorities responded swiftly after a water emergency was reported at approximately 7:45 a.m. that morning. The Wasatch County 911 Center, Sheriff’s Office, Wasatch County Fire District, and the Utah Division of Natural Resources collaborated in the search and recovery efforts, locating Singer across the reservoir far from the launch point.
Harsh Weather Conditions Contributed to Tragedy
Leo Lucey, Public Information Officer for the Sheriff’s Office, explained the conditions leading to the incident were “super windy, cold day with heavy wind gusts.” Singer had launched from the main boat ramp but was found on the opposite side of the lake, suggesting he was pushed by strong winds while alone on the water.
Investigators believe Singer died from a combination of drowning and exposure to the cold elements. While the investigation is ongoing, and officials await an autopsy report to finalize the cause of death, the incident is firmly classified as accidental.
Urgent Call for Life Jacket Use Across All Water Activities
“We recommend that everyone wear a safety vest no matter what they’re doing in the water, whether they’re in a boat or a kayak or fishing or paddleboarding,” said Lucey.
This tragic event underscores the dangers present on lakes and reservoirs, especially during unpredictable weather. The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office stresses that drownings occur annually in the area, with paddleboarders and other recreational water users at notable risk without proper safety gear.
As summer approaches, the number of water-related incidents typically rises. This fatality serves as a sober reminder for all outdoor enthusiasts in North Carolina and nationwide to prioritize life jackets and personal safety whenever venturing near or on the water.
Next Steps in Investigation and Public Safety Measures
Authorities continue to await results from the autopsy to clarify the circumstances of Singer’s death. Meanwhile, local law enforcement and safety agencies are intensifying outreach to educate the public about water hazards, including strong winds, cold temperatures, and isolation risks.
Residents and visitors near North Carolina’s many lakes and rivers are urged to heed this warning and ensure safety precautions are fully observed to prevent similar tragedies amid increased outdoor recreation.
The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office urges everyone involved in water sports to wear life jackets at all times and avoid solo outings when weather conditions are uncertain.
