Jensen Beach Boys Wrestling Captures Fifth at State Championships

UPDATE: The Jensen Beach High School boys wrestling team has proven its resilience by capturing fifth place at the Class 2A IBT state championships held on March 7, 2023, at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. Despite losing star wrestler Sebastian Degennaro to graduation, the Falcons showcased their strength with four athletes finishing in the top three.

The team amassed a total of 77.5 points, just 21.5 points behind fourth-place Charlotte and 11.5 points ahead of sixth-place North Fort Myers. Head coach Tom McMath praised his team’s performance, stating, “They balled out,” highlighting their determination and skill throughout the competition.

Freshman Kane Drake emerged as a standout competitor, securing a runner-up finish in the 120-pound weight class during his first state appearance. “I really had no clue I’d get this far,” Drake admitted, reflecting on his unexpected journey to the finals. He faced tough competition, ultimately falling to Eric Bush from Riverdale after a hard-fought match that ended with a pin in the third round.

Drake’s path to the finals included an impressive 21-8 majority decision victory over Lincoln junior Juan Torres and an 18-1 technical fall against East River senior Isaiah Rivera. In the semifinals, he secured a 6-1 decision against Gulf Breeze senior Garrett Ferguson, describing it as his favorite match of the tournament due to its intensity.

Finishing the season with a remarkable 41-7 record, Drake has committed to wrestling full-time, having transitioned from various sports. “The mindset you have to have to get into the room every day and go as hard as you can, there’s no other sport that has pushed me as hard as wrestling,” he remarked, showcasing his passion for the sport.

Alongside Drake, Jensen Beach’s Sair Lopez (126), Tyson Reyes (215), and Blake Elder (285) also earned third-place finishes in their respective weight classes. Lopez capped off his freshman season with a 36-6 record, while Reyes concluded his junior year at 26-2. Elder, finishing his senior season at 52-5, secured his podium position through a medical withdrawal victory.

McMath expressed pride in his team’s ability to rise to the occasion, stating, “The season is a grind sometimes, but we show up at this tournament. I’m just super proud, super grateful for our program and our kids.”

In related news, Fort Pierce Central’s Skyler West (138) also made headlines, earning a fourth-place finish at the Class 3A state championships with an outstanding 59-4 record.

As wrestling fans and families celebrate these achievements, the Jensen Beach Falcons continue to build on their legacy, showcasing talent and determination that will surely inspire future generations.
