Torquay United has dismissed manager Paul Wotton following a disappointing 0-5 home defeat to Chelmsford City on Saturday. The decision, made by the club’s owners, the Bryn Consortium, came after a board meeting on Sunday morning. Wotton, who had been with the club for nearly two years, was informed of his release in a statement that expressed gratitude for his efforts during his tenure.
The official announcement from Torquay United stated, “We are very grateful to Paul for his hard work, professionalism, and commitment during his time at the club. We thank Paul for his contribution, both on and off the pitch.” The club wished him success in his future endeavours. Former manager Neil Warnock will take charge of the team for the upcoming fixture against Farnborough on Tuesday, with further updates on interim arrangements expected soon.
Wotton’s time at Torquay started positively when he was named National League South Manager of the Month for January, having led the team to the top of the league. However, the Gulls have struggled since, earning only one point from their last five matches. Saturday’s loss marked their heaviest defeat at home since November 30, 2019. The attendance for the match was 3,224, and opinions among the fans regarding Wotton’s position varied; some supported him while others called for a change.
Wotton was appointed in May 2024 after the Bryn Consortium took over the club, rescuing it from administration. He inherited a challenging situation, with only one player remaining from the previous squad. Under his leadership, the team finished second in the league with 89 points, narrowly missing out on the title to Truro City due to goal difference, and lost in the Play-Off Semi-Final to Boreham Wood.
During the last summer transfer window, Wotton was given a larger budget, allowing him to strengthen the squad significantly. Key signings included Louis Dennis, Sonny Blu Lo-Everton, Matt Worthington, Callum Dolan, and Munashe Sundire. His assistant also transitioned from part-time to full-time. Just weeks ago, the Gulls were riding high on a seven-game unbeaten streak, but results have dramatically declined since then.
Injuries have severely affected Wotton’s selection options, particularly in recent matches. For the game against Chelmsford, he was missing influential players such as Dolan and centre-backs Jordan Dyer and Sam Dreyer. Additionally, Worthington fell ill on the morning of the match, and leading scorer Cody Cooke dislocated his shoulder during the game. Following the defeat, Torquay United has slipped to fourth place in the league, now ten points behind leaders Dorking Wanderers but only two points adrift of second-placed Hornchurch.
Wotton’s managerial record at Torquay includes 80 matches with 42 wins, 20 draws, and 18 losses, alongside two victories and five losses in the FA Cup and Trophy. With only 13 games remaining in the season, the club faces a pressing need to find Wotton’s permanent successor swiftly to secure a spot in the Play-Offs.
