Young Artist Hosts Fundraiser to Honor Late Aunt’s Legacy

Elle Smith, an 11-year-old budding artist, is set to host a benefit art show on March 22, 2025, in memory of her late aunt, Kim Keene, who passed away from breast cancer in September 2024. The event, titled “Benefit for Bubbles,” aims to raise funds for Paint Pink, a nonprofit organization founded by Keene to support individuals facing financial hardships during their cancer battles.

Honoring a Legacy

Known affectionately as Aunt Bubbles for her vibrant personality, Kim Keene was not only an artist but also the former owner of the Starving Artist Cafe in Norfolk. After her cancer diagnosis, she established Paint Pink to provide assistance to those in similar situations. Her sister, Kathy Keene, emphasized that one of Kim’s final wishes was to continue helping others through this initiative. “Painting was her outlet, and she wanted to support others facing the same challenges,” Kathy noted.

Elle shares a special bond with her late aunt, having participated in numerous paint parties organized by Kim since she was five. This year, as part of her school’s community service project, Elle decided to host an art show to aid cancer fighters. Initially uncertain about the concept, Kathy was astounded by the quality of Elle’s artwork, particularly pieces created during recent snow days. “She is talented like her aunt,” Kathy remarked. With her mother’s support, Elle developed a business plan and presented it to the Paint Pink board, who enthusiastically embraced the idea.

Event Details and Personal Touch

The upcoming art show will feature between 50 and 100 pieces of Elle’s artwork, with all proceeds benefiting Paint Pink. Elle has taken charge of the event’s details, planning decorations such as balloons, ribbons along the stair railings, a bubble maker, and refreshments including champagne and birthday cupcakes. “Elle really wants to raise lots of money to help, and when looking at her paintings, it feels like Kim is living on through them,” Kathy expressed.

Reflecting on her journey, Elle stated, “I always loved to paint but didn’t know I could actually do it. My aunt was such a great person and inspired me to be a better person. She showed me that even small things can make a difference.” She believes her aunt would be thrilled with the benefit show, saying, “My aunt would love this benefit show a million percent.”

The “Benefit for Bubbles” will take place from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at The Gallery at Paint Pink, located at 2200 Colonial Ave, #15. Interested individuals can visit paintpink.org to make a donation or learn more about the organization.
