Lawrence C. Cocke, a revered figure in the lifeguarding community and a dedicated family man, passed away at the age of 91 due to cardiac arrest. His death has left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends, who remember him as a loving and vibrant presence.

Born in Long Beach and raised in El Segundo, California, Cocke developed a passion for swimming during his youth. He attended El Segundo High School, where he excelled academically and athletically. Cocke later earned a Master’s degree in Psychology from California State University, Dominguez Hills. Throughout his life, he engaged deeply with his community, particularly through his work as a lifeguard.

Cocke served as a Lifeguard Lieutenant for over two decades, a role through which he made significant contributions to public safety. His remarkable career included numerous heroic rescues, such as rescuing a sheriff’s deputy from a helicopter crash in the surf. In addition to his athletic pursuits, Cocke was an avid deep-sea fisherman, often traveling to Alaska and Hawaii in search of trophy catches. His love for the water was evident in his various boating adventures, including paddling from Catalina Island.

Family and Personal Life

Those left to cherish his memory include his two daughters, Lorie Plasencia and Linda Casias, along with two step-daughters, Amie and Jenni Luke. He is also survived by three granddaughters—Tara, Sara, and Cara—and four great-grandchildren: Bella, Josie, Gabriela, and William. His brothers, Paul, Joseph, and Alex Cocke, remained close to him, often seeking his guidance.

His wife, Donna Jamison Cocke, described him as the love of her life and her best friend. The couple shared many adventures together, traveling the world to explore unique places and meet fascinating people. Donna’s heartbreak at his passing is palpable, as she reflects on their shared experiences.

Cocke’s passion for real estate also marked his professional journey, as he engaged in the purchase of apartment buildings, training a personal staff of nine to uphold high standards in their operations. His vitality and enthusiasm for life remained strong throughout his advanced years.
