New Disc Golf Course and Trail Extensions Set to Open in Williamston

Williamston is set to unveil a new disc golf course and extend its trail system, enhancing local recreational opportunities. The new course, located in the heart of town, has been under development and was recently trialed during an invitation-only tournament featuring over 70 teams from across the Upstate.

The 18-hole disc golf course boasts state-of-the-art baskets manufactured in New Zealand, making it the first of its kind in the state. According to Williamston Mayor Rockey Burgess, the course is thoughtfully designed to utilize the area’s natural terrain, offering players a unique challenge with its scenic landscape and various natural obstacles.

Community Engagement and Course Development

The project has involved significant community support, with volunteers dedicated to clearing and preparing the course for its grand opening. “This isn’t just dropping a few baskets in a field. This is a thoughtfully designed course that takes full advantage of the beautiful landscape we’re blessed with,” Mayor Burgess explained.

The development is part of a partnership between the Town of Williamston and the developers of Big Creek Station, a mixed-use commercial development that has been in the works since 2023. The new course will be situated next to the site of the former water treatment plant, which is being repurposed as part of Big Creek Station. This facility is expected to feature event rentals, green spaces, food trucks, and community markets.

The official opening of the disc golf course will coincide with a ribbon-cutting ceremony for two extensions of the Mineral Spring Trail. This trail extends from Mineral Spring Park along Big Creek to the old treatment plant, with plans to connect to Veterans Park.

Trail Improvements and Future Plans

The Mineral Spring Trail has faced challenges, including damage from Hurricane Helene last September, which affected the bridge over Big Creek. Currently, the bridge is undergoing temporary repairs, with new pilings being installed. Mayor Burgess indicated that this work will be completed within the next two months.

Additionally, a new extension of the Mineral Spring Trail from Veterans Park leads towards the future Saratoga Oaks subdivision, which is currently under construction. This extension, although usable, is not officially open due to ongoing repairs.

The Town is also planning to build another bridge over Big Creek to connect the paved trail extension to the new subdivision, which will include public parking spaces and an unpaved nature trail.

As the community eagerly anticipates the opening of the disc golf course and trail extensions, Mayor Burgess encourages residents to remain patient during the construction phase. “We’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready to enjoy,” he assured the public.

With these developments, Williamston is poised to enhance not only its recreational offerings but also its appeal as a vibrant community hub for outdoor activities.
