BREAKING: Mount Vernon Outland Airport has just been selected as the Terminus host site for the prestigious 2026 Air Race Classic, set to take place from June 25-29, 2026. This monumental decision marks a significant milestone for local tourism, bringing aviation enthusiasts, pilots, and crews from across the nation to Mount Vernon, Illinois.
Local officials are celebrating this event as the largest aviation gathering since the 1973 Blue Angels air show. The Air Race Classic, an all-female piloted cross-country race with roots dating back to the 1929 Women’s Air Derby, promises to showcase Mount Vernon’s hospitality and commitment to promoting women in aviation.
Chris Collins, Airport Manager, expressed his excitement: “Being selected as the Terminus for the Air Race Classic is a tremendous honor for Mount Vernon Outland Airport. This event puts our airport on a national stage and highlights the professionalism of our facilities and staff.”
The race will challenge teams to navigate a multi-day route across the United States, focusing on accuracy and flight planning rather than speed. Participants will arrive in Mount Vernon on Thursday, June 25, and will engage in various community activities and events through Monday, June 29.
Sheila Jolly-Scrivner, Host City Terminus Chair, emphasized the community impact: “This is truly a community-wide opportunity. From aviation enthusiasts to families and local businesses, the Air Race Classic offers something for everyone.”
A highlight of the event will be the public aviation celebration scheduled for Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The day will feature Young Eagle Flights for children, interactive aviation displays, and educational opportunities designed to inspire the next generation of pilots.
Local businesses are being encouraged to participate as sponsors, which will offer high-visibility exposure and engagement with a nationally respected aviation event. Angela Schrum, Mount Vernon Tourism Director, stated, “This event will have a significant positive impact on tourism and the local economy.”
As planning progresses, additional details regarding schedules and sponsorship opportunities will be released. For now, Mount Vernon is gearing up to welcome visitors and racers alike, showcasing everything the community has to offer while celebrating this historic aviation event.
