Stafford Middle School Girls Capture First HOPL Championship

The girls’ basketball team from Stafford Middle School has made history by winning the HOPL championship for the first time in 2025. Their impressive season culminated in a championship victory, solidifying their place in the school’s sports history.

Entering the tournament with a record of 7-2 in league play, Stafford earned the third seed in the HOPL tournament. In the first round, they faced Central Christian and secured a decisive victory with a score of 43-21. This win advanced them to the semifinals, where they encountered Norwich, a team that had previously defeated them during the regular season. In a thrilling match, Stafford emerged victorious with a narrow margin, winning 21-20.

The championship game saw Stafford take on the top-ranked and undefeated team, Cunningham. Demonstrating resilience and skill, Stafford clinched the title with a final score of 30-21. This victory is particularly significant as it marks their second encounter with both Norwich and Cunningham in the tournament, having lost to them earlier in the season.

Participation in girls’ sports at Stafford has seen a positive trend, with a dedicated roster of 16-18 players over the last few years. The team’s success can be attributed to the strong sense of camaraderie fostered within the small school environment. Players often explore various sports during middle school, creating a vibrant atmosphere for team sports.

The team’s playing style this season was characterized by a combination of fast-paced offense and strategic defense. Throughout the majority of their games, they employed a full-court press defense that transitioned into a zone defense. Their adaptability in adjusting tactics to match opponents contributed significantly to their success in the tournament.

Coach Jamie Kreutzer emphasized the improvements made this year, highlighting the team’s development in maintaining a fast pace while ensuring ball security. “We really improved on our fast-paced game style this season,” Kreutzer noted, attributing their performance to increased confidence and discipline.

The success of these young athletes is also evident in their achievements beyond basketball. A group of these players has not only secured back-to-back championships in girls’ basketball but has also claimed consecutive titles in girls’ volleyball within the HOPL.

The team’s motto, “Desire, Discipline, Dedication, RUN AS ONE,” encapsulates their spirit and determination throughout the season. The unity displayed on the court has been a source of pride for the school community.
