The Burlington boys’ hockey team is poised to make a significant impact in the upcoming postseason, despite experiencing a setback with a 3-1 loss to Wilmington midweek. After clinching the Middlesex League Freedom Division title, the Red Devils’ (13-3-1, 10-3-1) focus now shifts to ensuring that this defeat serves as a wakeup call rather than a downturn in their promising season.
Under the leadership of head coach Bobby Conceison Jr., who began his tenure after the retirement of his father, Bob Sr., the team has already surpassed its previous win totals. Bob Conceison Sr. concluded a remarkable career with 472 wins and two state championships over 35 years. The Red Devils now aim to win a postseason game for the first time since 2020, when they triumphed in a Division 1A play-in.
Senior co-captain Ryan McWhinnie emphasized the importance of maintaining focus. Following the loss to Wilmington, he stated, “It’ll humble us a lot. In the [MIAA Division 2] power rankings, we’ve been top four, top five the whole season. I’m not sure if that will change, but it should wake us up.” McWhinnie, who also plays golf and lacrosse, is part of a well-rounded roster that showcases depth across all grade levels.
In goal, senior Colin MacLeod has emerged as a key player, boasting a 1.20 goals against average and four shutouts this season. His performance marks a significant development after backing up former Middlesex Freedom MVP Camden Shanahan for two seasons. The team’s strategy includes three forward lines and three defensive pairings, highlighting their versatility and depth as they prepare for the postseason.
Coach Conceison Jr. praised the leadership of the seniors, stating, “They’ve done a really good job of building culture, making sure everyone is pulling in the same direction.” McWhinnie shares a line with junior Wyatt Condon and sophomore Jake Griffin, while senior Giacomo Berardinelli plays alongside junior James Gordon and sophomore Nick Tulipano. Berardinelli expressed confidence in his teammates, noting, “Having depth is huge.”
The younger Conceison maintains a close relationship with his father, who continues to coach golf at Burlington and assists with the girls’ hockey program led by Bobby’s sister, Chrissy Conceison. “He’s a really good sounding board,” Conceison Jr. said. “It’s about relationships, helping kids get better not only as hockey players but as people.”
This season, the Red Devils find themselves newly positioned in Division 2, having appealed to move up from Division 3 to Division 1. With a reduction in skaters from nearly 70 to approximately 40, the decision was timely as the team strives for consistent competitive success. “We’re excited to compete wherever we are,” said Conceison Jr.
In other notable developments, Reading has claimed the Middlesex League Liberty Division title for the first time in 12 years. The Rockets, with an impressive record of 14-2-2, capped their league success with a decisive 3-0 victory against Winchester. Coach Mark Doherty expressed pride in his team’s accomplishment, stating, “It’s still a test, it’s an accomplishment and I’m thrilled for the kids. They’ve really bought in.”
The competitive landscape continues to evolve with teams like No. 13 Falmouth, which secured the Cape & Islands League Atlantic Division title for the first time since 2022, and No. 19 Weymouth, who clinched the Bay State Conference Herget title for the second consecutive year. Other teams making headlines include Medfield, Bourne, and Newburyport, each achieving significant milestones in their respective leagues.
Looking ahead, key matchups are on the horizon. On Saturday, No. 2 St. John’s Prep will face Newburyport in the annual Derek Hines game, a tribute to a former player who lost his life in action. Additionally, No. 1 Catholic Memorial will compete against No. 6 Pope Francis in a highly anticipated rematch.
As the season progresses, Burlington’s focus remains on building momentum, learning from setbacks, and preparing for the challenges that lie ahead. The commitment to teamwork and resilience will be crucial as they navigate the postseason landscape.
