Steamboat Athletes Shine at Olympics: Belshaw Leads, Winters Competes

The Olympic Games are now underway, showcasing the talents of athletes from around the globe. Steamboat Springs is represented by several competitors, including snowboarder Cody Winters and ski jumper Annika Belshaw, who made their mark during the first weekend of events.

Belshaw’s Impressive Olympic Debut

Annika Belshaw, a 23-year-old athlete from Steamboat and a student at the University of Utah, set the tone in her Olympic debut on Saturday. Competing in the women’s individual normal hill ski jumping event, Belshaw scored an impressive 118.5 points in her first jump. This performance allowed her to advance to the medal round, where she ultimately finished in 21st place. Belshaw was the top American jumper, outperforming teammates Paige Jones and Josie Johnson, who placed 23rd and 27th, respectively.

Winters and Ledecka Compete in Snowboard Parallel Giant Slalom

On Sunday, Cody Winters joined fellow competitor Ester Ledecka in the snowboard parallel giant slalom event. This discipline features two snowboarders racing against each other, navigating a course marked by flags. The top 16 competitors from the qualification round advance to an elimination tournament, where each athlete has two runs on opposite sides of the course.

Ledecka excelled in the qualification round, achieving the best two runs and defeating her opponent, Claudia Riegler of Austria, by a margin of 1.13 seconds in the first knockout stage. Unfortunately, her journey ended in the quarterfinals when a slip caused her to lose valuable time. She narrowly missed advancing, finishing just 0.06 seconds behind Austria’s Sabine Payer, who went on to secure the silver medal.

Winters faced challenges during his qualification runs. After experiencing two skids in his first run, he improved significantly in his second but ultimately fell short of the knockout stage. His combined time of 1 minute 27.99 seconds placed him 21st, slightly behind the qualification minimum and marking an improvement from his 29th place finish in the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Colby’s Performance in Men’s Ski Jumping

Looking ahead, Jason Colby, the youngest Steamboat Olympian in Milan Cortina, took to the air on Monday. His first jump in the qualification round garnered a score of 122.5 points, placing him 30th and allowing him to advance to the medal round. Colby significantly improved his performance during the medal round, achieving a score of 129.8 points, which ranked as the tenth best jump of the round. In the end, he secured an overall finish of 20th.

With each athlete’s unique journey, Steamboat Springs continues to make its presence known at the Olympic Games, showcasing the determination and skill of its competitors on a global platform. As the Games progress, fans eagerly anticipate more exciting performances from these local athletes.
