Great American Outdoor Show Opens with Exciting Events in Harrisburg

The Great American Outdoor Show commenced on February 9, 2024, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex. Hosted by the National Rifle Association (NRA), this expansive event runs through February 15 and showcases a wide array of outdoor activities and products. Following the closure of the Greater Philadelphia Sports Show, this festival is now the premier outdoor event within reasonable driving distance for enthusiasts.

Occupying an impressive 650,000 square feet, the show features over 1,100 exhibitors across nine halls, making it the largest consumer sports and outdoor show in the world. Attendees can explore exhibits ranging from firearms and fishing tackle to boats and recreational vehicles. A particular attraction is the presence of more than 400 outfitters and charter boat captains, providing opportunities for adventure seekers to book outdoor experiences.

Family-Friendly Activities and Expert Presentations

The event includes numerous family-oriented attractions. The Eddie Eagle Kid’s Zone, located in the Hunting Outfitter Hall, offers free activities such as wildlife identification, arts and crafts, and a trout pond, ensuring younger attendees remain engaged throughout the show.

For those interested in fishing, the Kids Casting Contest is hosted by volunteers from Capital City Bassmaster. Kids can learn techniques for casting and compete in a friendly environment on February 14 and 15. Archery enthusiasts can also participate in various activities, including the 3D bowhunter challenge and shooting lanes designed for testing equipment before purchasing.

A highlight of the show is the extensive roster of over 200 seminars led by outdoor experts, touching on topics like hunting, trapping, cooking with wild game, and fishing strategies. This educational aspect of the event enhances the overall experience for visitors.

Exciting Attractions and Concerts

Firearms play a central role at the Great American Outdoor Show, highlighted by the “Wall of Guns” raffle. Attendees can purchase tickets for a chance to win one of more than 40 firearms, including rifles, shotguns, and pistols. Only 100 tickets are sold at a time, increasing the odds for participants.

The NRA Air Gun Range presents a unique opportunity for families to learn about shooting air guns in a safe environment. With guidance from NRA Range Safety Officers, guests can try their skills at various stations featuring airsoft rifles and pistols.

Entertainment is also a significant component of the event. The 9th Annual NRA Country Concert will feature performances by Zach Williams and Megan Woods on February 13, followed by another concert on February 14 with Tucker Wetmore and special guest Larry Fleet.

Another notable attraction is the PA Taxidermy Association Competition, where professionals and hobbyists showcase their artistry. Additionally, the Pennsylvania Outdoor Writers Association’s (POWA) Annual Sportsman’s Auction will take place on the final day of the show, raising funds for the Kermit Henning Youth Educational Grant Program, which supports youth engagement in outdoor activities.

The Great American Outdoor Show continues daily through February 15, with hours from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. (local time) on most days, and special hours on the final day.
