Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) has reached a significant milestone in its ongoing expansion efforts with the recent ribbon-cutting ceremony for the West Infill project. This new addition to the Barbara Jordan Terminal adds more than 75,000 square feet of space, enhancing passenger capacity and improving overall airport operations.
The West Infill project, which spans four levels, is set to include a new Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint that is scheduled to open on February 23, 2024. This development is part of a larger initiative aimed at upgrading the airport’s infrastructure to boost security and efficiency for the over 21 million passengers that travel through AUS annually.
According to airport officials, the enhancements will not only increase space but also improve the travel experience. The upgrades include a new Outbound Baggage Handling System, additional ticketing counters, and expanded operational areas for airlines. The project also features art and design improvements and modernized infrastructure, including an independent heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system, new elevators, and advanced mechanical, electrical, and IT systems.
Ghizlane Badawi, Chief Executive Officer of AUS, emphasized the importance of the West Infill project, stating, “The completion of the West Infill project is a pivotal step forward for AUS and for our community. This project is about more than adding space; it’s about delivering a better experience for every traveler as quickly as possible.”
The total investment for this expansion amounts to $241 million, funded through various sources including airport revenues, future revenue bonds, and grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The project also received $15.99 million from the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Notably, AUS has confirmed that no taxpayer dollars were utilized in financing this expansion.
As the airport continues to adapt to the increasing demand for air travel, the West Infill project represents a crucial step in enhancing the facilities and services provided to travelers.
