Cayman Martin Thrives at Crespi, Leading Team with Patience and Skill

Crespi junior forward Cayman Martin has emerged as a key player for the basketball team, demonstrating the value of patience and hard work. After spending his sophomore year playing junior varsity due to CIF regulations, Martin has blossomed into one of the team’s most dependable athletes.

Arriving from Japan, Martin faced challenges as a foreign student, forcing him to start at a lower level. Initially, he felt frustrated about not being able to play varsity basketball. However, Martin turned this setback into an opportunity to improve. “At the beginning, I was very frustrated and sad not being able to play varsity. I saw it as an opportunity and advantage by working even harder every single day,” he explained. His perseverance has clearly paid off, as he now leads the Celts with an average of 14.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Under the guidance of head coach Derek Fisher, Martin’s journey serves as an inspiring example for both players and parents. “Every student-athlete’s journey is unique,” Fisher noted. “There is no set or fixed time for him or her to have these great moments. Help them create an environment for success and then allow them to determine how their success plays out on their timeline.”

Standing at 6-foot-6, Martin has developed a reputation as the ultimate team player. He consistently demonstrates a selfless attitude, running the court tirelessly, setting screens, and prioritizing team success over personal glory. “Lower-level basketball prepared me for the varsity level by showing what it is to be a leader and the main guy on the team,” Martin reflected.

His dedication is evident in his performance alongside talented teammates, including Jasiah Williams and the Barnes brothers, Carter and Isaiah. Martin has recorded nine games with 19 points or more, showcasing his ability to capitalize on scoring opportunities while maintaining a team-first mentality. Fisher praised Martin, stating, “Cayman’s efficiency stands out because he doesn’t try to force things to happen.”

Crespi’s season has seen the team achieve a record of 19-11, culminating in a spot in the Mission League tournament semifinal. This performance has secured the Celts an automatic playoff berth. Following a victory over Harvard-Westlake and a narrow loss to top-ranked Notre Dame by just four points, Crespi is in contention for inclusion in the Open Division playoffs should the section expand to a 12-team field.

As of January 26, Crespi was ranked No. 14 in the latest computer rankings, with the potential to rise into the Top 12 after an impressive week of play. If they do not secure a Top 12 ranking, they are likely to be a top seed in the Division 1 playoffs. The CIF Southern Section will announce the basketball playoff pairings on Saturday at 12:00 PM.

Martin’s story highlights the importance of patience and hard work in achieving success in sports. His journey serves as a reminder that sometimes the slow and steady path can lead to the most rewarding outcomes.
