Doris Wheeler, a dedicated community member and correctional officer, passed away on January 13, 2026, at the age of 67. Born on January 11, 1959, in Gary, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late District Elder Nordley Wheeler Jr. and Lea Etha Wheeler. Her life was characterized by faith, service, and a commitment to her family and community.
Doris was baptized in the name of Jesus Christ and filled with the Holy Ghost at Logan Park Assembly of Christ. She was proud of her educational achievements, graduating from West Side High School in 1977. Throughout her career, Doris held various positions, ultimately serving as a Correctional Officer at the Lake County Sheriff’s Department.
Her passing is mourned by many. Doris is preceded in death by her parents and several siblings, including five sisters—Bernice Turner, Bettie Finkley, Leler Polk, Annette Wheeler, and Carlene Jones—and three brothers—Elbert Wheeler, Nordley Wheeler III, and Edrick Wheeler.
Doris leaves behind her son, Donovan Clinton-Allen McDonald, along with two sisters, Mary Douglas and Roena Dickinson, who are joined by a special friend, First Lady Debra Cotton. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends who will cherish her memory.
Funeral Arrangements
Visitation for Doris will take place on January 30, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m.. Both services will be held at Mt. Zion Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ, located at 4937 Massachusetts Street. Elder Sherman Paul will officiate the ceremony. Doris will be laid to rest at Oak Hill Cemetery.
In honor of her memory, the family encourages those wishing to pay their respects to consider planting a living memorial or sending flowers. Doris Wheeler’s legacy of faith and service will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who knew her.
