URGENT UPDATE: Virginia has declared a state of emergency as residents prepare for a massive winter storm expected to hit this weekend. The storm, which will impact Virginia and West Virginia, is forecast to bring heavy snow, sleet, and dangerous ice, prompting authorities to advise against all travel until conditions improve.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the storm will begin affecting the region late Saturday evening, with predictions of up to 12 inches of snow in Virginia and 9 to 12 inches in West Virginia. Ice accumulation could reach 2/10 inch, making travel extremely hazardous.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger announced the state of emergency in a press conference, emphasizing the urgency of the situation. “Please, please listen to the requests that we are putting out,” she urged residents. “Stay off the roads, particularly beginning Saturday night, all day Sunday, and into Monday.”
The NWS warns that this significant winter storm will produce a combination of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain from the Southern Rockies to New England through Monday. “Widespread travel disruptions, prolonged power outages, and vast tree damage are likely,” the NWS stated.
Residents should expect dangerously cold wind chills and near-record-breaking temperatures starting Friday night through early next week. Later on Sunday, freezing rain is expected to create a quarter-inch layer of ice in the Piedmont region, further complicating travel and safety conditions.
Governor Spanberger reassured the public of the state’s preparedness, stating, “I have full confidence in the leadership of the folks here behind me and, importantly, the people who will be doing the work across our Commonwealth.” However, she highlighted that the mix of severe weather elements could greatly extend the time required to clear roads effectively.
As the storm approaches, authorities continue to monitor conditions closely, and residents are advised to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. With major impacts expected, this winter storm poses a serious threat to safety across Virginia and West Virginia.
