Carly Anderson Powers Clinton Maroons to Victory Streak

Carly Anderson has emerged as a pivotal player for the Clinton High School girls’ basketball team, leading the Maroons to notable success this season. Since relocating from Bloomington midway through her freshman year, Anderson has been instrumental in Clinton’s rise as one of the top teams in the area. Her performance during the Monticello Holiday Hoopla in late December not only secured the Maroons their first title at the event but also earned Anderson the prestigious MVP accolade, averaging an impressive 24.3 points and 10.5 rebounds over the tournament.

“I came in and wanted to win real badly,” Anderson said regarding her outstanding performance. “I did what I could do and what was best for my team. I worked really hard for this, and I’m glad it paid off.” The Maroons are currently riding a remarkable 14-game winning streak, with their last defeat occurring on December 8 against Tri-Valley. Clinton, now with an overall record of 18-4, is set to extend this streak in an upcoming match against Warrensburg-Latham.

Anderson’s breakout senior season can be attributed to her rigorous training regimen. Clinton head coach Josh Williams highlighted her commitment: “She’s either working on her game all the time or working on her body and getting stronger. It’s her relentless effort to be the best she can be.” Standing at 5-foot-8, Anderson has consistently trained with Heyen Hoops in Bloomington-Normal, showcasing her dedication to improving her skills.

Looking ahead, Anderson plans to continue her basketball career at the collegiate level after committing to Lincoln Land Community College in late September. The Loggers have established a reputation as one of the top programs in the NJCAA Division II this season. “What a great place for her to go,” Williams remarked. “They’re going to love her shooting and toughness, and I’m looking forward to seeing what she can do over there.”

The success of the Maroons can also be attributed to the synergy within the team. Senior point guard Clara Dempsey acknowledged Anderson’s impact on her own performance: “Carly gets me an automatic assist almost every time I pass it to her, so that’s great for my stats, too. Our whole team is great, and we can trust each other.” With an average of over 61 points per game, the Maroons have displayed a level of talent and experience that is impressive for this stage of the season.

Anderson and Dempsey have formed a formidable offensive duo over the past two years, complemented by fellow seniors Lilah Cluver and Avery Smith, who have also significantly contributed to the team’s scoring ability. Williams emphasized the natural talent of his players, noting their journey began in junior high when they nearly advanced to state. “It’s so fun, and I’m so blessed to have these kids,” he added.

Reflecting on their journey, Anderson expressed the sentiment shared by her teammates. “It’s been super special for all of us,” she stated. “We all wish we could have one more year together, but how we’re playing now is the best way we can go out. We’re pushing each other and making each other better.” She believes the team’s continued improvement will position them well for the postseason.

Despite their success, the Maroons are determined to break a regional title drought that has persisted since 2013. Williams acknowledged the challenges posed by strong postseason opponents but remains optimistic about their prospects, noting the team’s diverse scoring options will create tough matchups in the Class 2A bracket.

“I think we’ll make a deep run, maybe even an opportunity for a state title,” Dempsey asserted. “We’re going to have to work hard and keep getting better every day. I think our hard schedule from the beginning set us up. We’re playing hard teams, and we’re coming out with some wins. We’re learning, growing, and setting us up for success later on.”

As the Maroons continue their campaign, they embody the spirit of teamwork and resilience, with players like Anderson leading the charge toward what they hope will be a memorable postseason.
