U.S. Forces Target Al-Qaeda Leader Linked to December Attack

U.S. forces carried out a targeted strike in northwest Syria on December 15, 2023, resulting in the death of a key leader of an Al-Qaeda affiliate. The individual, identified as Bilal Hasan al-Jasim, was linked to a recent attack on American personnel. According to U.S. Central Command, al-Jasim played a pivotal role in planning assaults and was directly associated with an ISIS shooter involved in an ambush that occurred on December 13, 2023, in Palmyra, Syria. In that assault, two U.S. service members and an American interpreter were killed, while additional personnel from the U.S. and Syria sustained injuries.

U.S. Central Command confirmed the operation on December 17, describing al-Jasim as “an experienced terrorist leader.” The strike represents a continuation of the U.S. military’s commitment to counterterrorism efforts in the region. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that the death of the terrorist operative reflects the United States’ resolve in pursuing those responsible for attacks against its forces.

Strategic Counterterrorism Operations

Adm. Brad Cooper, commander of U.S. Central Command, emphasized the importance of the strike, stating, “There is no safe place for those who conduct, plot, or inspire attacks on American citizens and our warfighters. We will find you.” The operation is part of a broader strategy under an initiative known as Hawkeye Strike, which has seen intensified military action against ISIS and its affiliates in Syria.

Since the launch of Hawkeye Strike, U.S. and allied forces have targeted over 100 ISIS infrastructure and weapons sites, employing more than 200 precision munitions. The operation began in December 2023 as a response to the growing threats posed by ISIS in the region. In the past year, U.S. and partner forces have captured more than 300 ISIS operatives and eliminated over 20 individuals identified as direct threats to the United States and regional stability.

The December 13 ambush, described by President Donald Trump as “an ISIS attack against the U.S.,” prompted a swift counteraction from U.S. forces. Following the incident, Trump vowed to retaliate against those responsible, reinforcing the United States’ commitment to protecting its personnel and allies in the region.

These ongoing counterterrorism operations underscore the U.S. military’s focus on disrupting terrorist networks and mitigating risks that threaten both American and regional security. As the situation in Syria continues to evolve, the U.S. remains poised to respond to emerging threats with decisive action.
