Dickinson Mavericks, Bismarck Century Patriots, Jeremiah Hayes, Wyatt Turner, Jacob Wolf, Max Glaser, Jake Glaser, January 15, 2026, Dickinson High School, Watford City
The Dickinson Mavericks boys wrestling team achieved a significant milestone by defeating the Bismarck Century Patriots 39-26 on January 15, 2026, marking their first win in the Western Dakota Association (WDA) duals this season. The match took place at Dickinson High School and improved the Mavericks’ record to 3-1 in dual competition.
Head coach Jeremiah Hayes emphasized the importance of fundamentals and maintaining positions throughout the match. “The kids did a much better job of maintaining positions and winning positions, which led to us scoring points and getting matches to go our way,” Hayes stated. This strategic focus contributed to the Mavericks securing crucial victories where they needed them most.
The Mavericks’ success was largely driven by their lower weight classes, which provided a strong start against the depth of the Patriots’ heavyweights. Jacob Wolf and Max Glaser both recorded technical falls at 107 and 114 pounds, respectively. Jake Glaser made a notable impact by achieving the fastest pin of the evening, finishing his match just 56 seconds into the first period, allowing Dickinson to take a commanding 16-0 lead at 121 pounds.
“We got a lot of very talented wrestlers in our lower weights,” Hayes remarked. “Jacob Wolf is a young kid that has been very fortunate to have phenomenal practice partners since junior high. Our two Glaser boys have put in piles of time, and they are hands down our hammers.”
The highlight of the dual came at the 133-pound weight class, where Wyatt Turner, ranked second in the state, faced off against third-ranked Grady Iverson. Turner dominated the match, securing a 21-6 technical fall, which further extended the Mavericks’ lead and improved his record to 21-8 for the season. Hayes praised Turner’s athleticism and focused on his development in fundamentals, stating, “We’re driving home fundamentals with him and making sure we have solid setups to our shots.”
Turner reflected on his training, noting the importance of classic fundamentals. “Trying to keep our stance low even when it sucks and when you gotta grind out a match,” he explained. His ability to maintain composure, regardless of the score, has been a key aspect of his performance this season.
The Mavericks will continue their campaign with a Quad Meet in Watford City on January 20, where they will face Mandan, Williston, and Watford City. This match will provide another opportunity for the team to build on their recent success and further establish their presence in the WDA standings. As the season progresses, the focus remains on honing skills and developing the competitive spirit that has defined the Mavericks’ approach thus far.
