In a candid interview with Capital FM to promote the comedy reboot of Anaconda, Black expressed remorse over his decision, stating, “I do regret it, saying no… it was one of the best movies ever made.”
Black, who has enjoyed a remarkable resurgence in Hollywood, with six films grossing over $500 million each since 2016, reflected on how he passed up the opportunity to voice the primary antagonist in a franchise that has become a cultural milestone. In the interview, Black recalled being skeptical about the character, saying, “I was like, ‘Uhhh, [director] Brad Bird? Never heard of him!’” He admitted to requesting a rewrite to add depth to the character, which ultimately led to him losing the role. “He was like, ‘Yeah, you’re done,’” Black lamented.
The casting of Jason Lee as Syndrome instead has since entered film history. Black’s missed opportunity stands out even more considering the franchise’s success and the critical acclaim for the original film, which is often hailed as one of the greatest superhero movies of the 21st century.
